Oh, Martha
by angie.
Monday morning I had tickets to a taping of the Martha Stewart show. Joanna graciously gave up her ticket, which allowed Kaylene and I to go together! We had so much fun. We were worried we wouldn’t get in (a la Rachael Ray), so all the way there and while we were waiting in line we pretended we didn’t care whether we got in or not. But the more the line moved up and the closer we got, the less we could hide our true excitement. By the time we actually got in the studio we were so excited! And guess what – they put us on the front row! (I guess I have good luck with that.) We were like 8 feet from Martha.
The show turned out to be a live taping, which made it all the more interesting to watch. It was funny to see the people behind the camera holding up signs that said “2 MINUTES” and motioning for Martha to quit rambling and wrap it up because commercial break was coming. It was also interesting to see Martha in action. Right before the show started she got quite frustrated that the WiFi in the building wasn’t on because she was supposed to read tweets from her Blackberry for the first segment. Then the cameras turned on and she was the composed, calm Martha we all know.
I loved that after the show was over, they opened it up for question and answer with Martha. Audience members could ask her any question they wanted. I thought that was a nice thing. At other shows I’ve been to, the audience kind of feels like just another prop on the set, so it was nice to be acknowledged. They also gave out free stuff at every commercial break (I got a book about tulips), and a bag of free goodies at the end, and there was free hot cocoa and warm baked goods outside afterward! The whole experience was just great and we had such a fun time. You can watch clips from our episode here.

You are beautiful and such a natural! You have always been so genuine and real and I love how your writing flows onto the blog as you chat about your experiences so we all can feel like we participate right along with you! What a gift you are and thank you for being willing to share. You and Kaylene had such a great experience and you are becoming a celebrity with all this front row treatment. “Oh Martha”……….. is right! You have to smile when you say that. Bless her heart! I hope Cherene reads this! tee hee
Wow, what a cool thing to go and do! I love the pics that you took there on the set…how neat! You are so pretty Ang, I love your hair! Hey, keep doing fun spontaneous things! I feel like I’m along for the ride….
So glad you got to see Martha! She’s probably way better than Rachel Ray anyway. (When we were on Rachael Ray, she was quite rude, actually. Wouldn’t ever look at us, and wasn’t very personable. And we were the GUESTS!!! But her revolving studio audience is pretty cool, and her gifts are usually awesome.) Super cool pics. I’m surprised they let you take pics of the studio. Very cool! :)
I am speechless.
Your title cracked me up- I thought it was only my family that says “Oh Martha” like that. And I think I can see your face when you say it cause I’m sure we do it the same;)
I love the pics on set. Smart thinking taking a pic up into the lighting like that. I feel even more like I went with you!
What a fun little adventure! New York has all sorts of fun ways to entertain – central park, amazing architecture, museums, and all the shows that are taped there. FUN!
Are you flashing some type of gang sign in that picture with Kaylene?
Thats interesting how Martha was all fired up just a few seconds before the show started. Then, when the cameras came on, she was all smiles.
Hahaha Ryan, I totally noticed my awkward hand signal in that picture and thought, “What am I doing?!?” I really need to pay more attention to what I’m doing in pictures. Stuff like that happens to me all the time. I call it “the claw” usually.
