Night out with Kathy

by angie.

Last month I had the fun opportunity to meet one of my dear blogging friends. In my experience, blogging friends always turn out to be great real-life friends. This meeting was no exception. Katherine and I had such a fun evening together. I’d dare say it was one of my most memorable NYC nights.

We met at Serendipity for dinner. Due to some very skilled sweet-talking on Kathy’s part, Danny, the very flamboyant manager whose birthday was that day, became our new best friend. He got us right in (we skipped an hour wait), sat us at the best table in the house (upstairs by the window), treated us to free salads and frozen hot chocolate, and kept coming by to check on us, sit down and chat. It was awesome. Especially the part where he told us about his favorite birthday gift: a mani/pedi spa package. He was amazing. We love Danny.

Kathy and I enjoyed great conversation for hours, wore out our welcome at Serendip, then hit Forty Carrots upstairs at Bloomingdale’s in search of a place to continue our conversation. We stayed till after hours and got locked inside Bloomies at 10:15 pm when we finally decided to leave. After we wandered a bit through the empty, darkened store, a nice janitor showed us the secret exit. Thanks Katherine for an entertaining and memorable evening! It was so much fun getting to know you – in real life. I have a feeling we’ll be friends for a long time.

Blog friends are the BEST!

Amen! Blog friends rock! And what a fun night. I wonder if Danny will be working when I go… Hmm…maybe I’ll call ahead.

I loved meeting you in real life, Angie! (I just love REAL New Yorkers– seriously.) That was such a FUN night! And Danny was just adorable– such a gracious host/manager. You forgot that he moved our reservation up a full THREE hours– from 9pm (all that was available a full 8 days ahead) to 6pm. What a sweetie!

Our late-night visit to Bloomies could’ve easily resulted in a “Night At The Museum”-like adventure, huh?! It would’ve been a blast to have our Girls’ Night Out turn into a crazy all-night fashion show/tea party/home decorating extravaganza! I would’ve had you open up the 40 Carrots kitchen and give me a couple of in-depth “Mrs. Harding Cooks” gourmet cooking lessons! Ahh, so many possibilities… Btw, do you think we would’ve gotten arrested the next morning?

I agree, blogging friends are pretty awesome. Love Abbie’s comment above– so true. As you put it– it was really fun to “take our friendship offline!” Angie, you ROCK!

  3. Katherine says:

PS– next time we should really invite Klane! Good thing he was busy with Scouts that night! Someday I would love to meet him as well. He seriously rocks too– ESPECIALLY with that new rocker ‘do– courtesy of Mrs. Harding! (She can cook AND style hair…)

  4. Oh my goodness, you are too funny! That does sound like quite the night.

    Yay for bloggers!!

ps. I’m thinking of going to Serendipity on Friday, you think you can, ahem, give Danny a call?? ;)

Oh my goodness! You look so drop dead gorgeous and I am so happy you have made so many friends in NYC and thru your amazing blog. Wow! Isn’t it Great!

What an adventure you two had and it makes you wonder if Kathy’s life is this full and exciting every where she goes!

Ang, you both look so gorgeous! She looks like a great person….and what fun to meet in person! I love making new friends too. So, you should have seen Jayme’s face as she was working on her brand new blog tonight and all of a sudden a couple of comments popped up and she was giggling with excitment! Thanks for your message so quick…that was lucky that you happened to jump on line about the same time. Blogs are so much fun!!

love your blog! just stopping by via Style My Happiness. looks like you lead such a cool nyc life! i am so jealous. i love nyc. how fun to meet one of your blogging buddies in person. she sounds like a really fun person and how exciting that must’ve been to hit serendipity and bloomingdales in one night!

  8. Elle says:

How lucky to get treated like VIP’s! Good things happen at Serendipity! I love that movie with John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. It’s so cute.

  9. Alyssa says:

How fun! How do you get all of these blog friends? Was the serendipity the one that is in the movie serendipity? That movie drives me crazy b/c I just want them to run into each other and quite being let down by their unfortunate timing.

Thanks for your comment about Micro. It is so amazing how Dr. Jensen had been all over the world and taught at some of the most prestigious universities and been up for a Nobel prize – TWICE! I can’t believe you didn’t really like Dr. Jennings. Maybe you had someone else b/c this guy is hilarious. He is tall and the arms on his lab coat end somewhere between his elbow and wrist.

You are so sweet to say that I deserve an A when you are one of the smartest people I know. I study for hours and hours to get my grades but you have natural smartness! You just walked into the HOAT test and nailed it and you had the highest ACT score DH has ever seen.

I really hope someday I can come visit you in NY!

Katherine – I love the way you think! We should’ve totally taken advantage and had a “Girls Night IN” at Bloomies! That could potentially be quite the party. The authorities would understand… right? ;)

Casey & Abbie – I don’t know if Danny was so nice because it was his birthday and he was in a good mood or if it was because Kathy chatted with him on the phone the week before and became best friends with him. But he was amazing. I might take him a thank-you card and flowers or something – then I’ll REALLY be on his good side! :)

Alyssa – Yes, it is the same restaurant from the movie! The Frozen Hot Chocolate is what John Cusak and Kate Beckinsale ordered when they went to the restaurant in the movie, it’s really good! We sat at a table right by where they did in the movie, upstairs. I love that movie because it’s true to the city geography, all the places they go in it really are within just a few blocks of each other.

  11. Katherine says:

Girls Night IN– brilliant, Angie! Yes, quite the party indeed. And yes, I definitely think we’d be able to get the authorities to understand. We’d just sweet-talk our way out of any legal misconduct or implications, haha!

  12. James says:

Serendipity NYC is the best! My girlfriend and I celebrated our first anniversary there. Sounds like meeting your blogging friend Kathy there was, uh… serendipitous! I’d say that meeting Danny and then getting such celeb treatment from him def was!

  13. Morgan says:

How fun! I cannot get over the special treatment that you two got at Serendipity. I’ve always had to wait for at least a couple of hours when I’ve gone. It sounds like it was such a perfect night. It must have been so amazing to meet Katherine. She sounds wonderful. Blog friends really are the best!

  14. Katelyn says:

Hi! I linked over from Yelena’s blog. I just LOVE this story! How fun to finally meet a good “online friend” and have such a happy and interesting experience. Networking is so great!

  15. Katelyn says:

Oh hey, I meant to ask if you and your friend went to Serendipity and got this royal treatment on a weekday evening or a weekend? Either way, it’s amazing and such a cool and funny story! Danny sounds super fun. See, who says New Yorkers aren’t some of the nicest people on earth?

  16. Angie says:

Katelyn, it was actually on a weekend! Friday night at 6:00! It was incredible, the place was packed with all these people waiting for tables, and we had called a week earlier for a reservation and they were booked until 9:00! That phone call happened to be answered by Danny, which was lucky cause he totally hooked us up. I just hoped all the people waiting weren’t upset when we waltzed right past them! Crazy.

  17. Sarah says:

I have met some of the coolest people through blogging! I absolutely love this story – so funny! Danny sounds like the man! So glad that you too had so much fun!

  18. Katelyn says:

Thanks for answering my question! Oh my….a Friday night at 6:00…. ummm, that’s like the busiest time! I bet most people weren’t upset at you when you waltzed right past them…. they probably just thought you were a supermodel with connections! Very cool.

  19. Katelyn says:

Oh yeah…. and they probably just figured that Kathy was your modeling agent! Love it.

  20. Angie says:

Oh my gosh, you are much too kind! But thanks for the compliment!

  21. Allie says:

Ha ha, this is too classic. Angie, my mom just had a total blast out on the town with you. Thanks for being so great :) And LOVE the pics, by the way! PS… that thing she does where she makes instant best friends with people… she has ALWAYS been like that. I can’t remember her any other way. Isn’t it the best?!

  22. Elle says:

Angie, just wanna tell you that after reading this post the other day, it inspired me to do something I’ve NEVER done before: buy my mom her Mother’s Day gift EARLY (instead of the week/day before) from Bloomingdales.com! I’m so freakin proud of myself! I’d forgotten how much I love that store (and I scored a couple of uh-mazing scarves in their clearance section). Mother’s Day=DONE! EARLY. From Bloomies, no less. Sweet.

Now if I could just convince my boyfriend to watch Serendipity (instead of Avatar) with me tonight…. yeah right.

  23. Hannah says:

I’m so glad you and my mother had so much fun at dinner. I totally want to meet Danny…

    xox, Hannah

  24. Katherine says:

Guess what one of my daughters gave me for Mother’s Day yesterday: Serendipity, the movie!! I laughed so hard. Now I can “stop by” any time I want!

  25. Angie says:

Kathy, that’s great you got that movie! It’s one of my favorite NY movies and favorite movies in general. I like how it’s geographically correct, the places they go in the movie really are all very close together, within walking distance! And it’s also fun because it’s all in the neighborhood where I work. That’s my hood! ;)
